Amplifying Youth Voice and Leadership: Building Youth Community Power

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation (NMEF) funds an ambitious youth organizing portfolio across the New England region. Through a unique mix of direct financial support, strategic technical assistance, and network development, youth voice and power are helping to shape the broader context of education policy and practice to be more student centered. Youth and adult representatives from two NMEF youth organizing grantees--Hearing Youth Voices (New London, CT) and Providence Student Union--will share their work through a moderated conversation with the Dr. Keith Catone from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform. By centering those most affected, supporting youth voice is essential to educational equity.

Voices from the Field: Teacher Voice and the Opportunity for Equity

With the support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform conducted a national study of teacher leadership and advocacy for education policy. While the field is rife with examples of teacher leadership within school walls, it seems a bigger challenge to ensure teachers’ expertise informs, affects and drives education policymaking, especially with direct benefit for students of color. Join us to hear about the research and findings, and have a conversation about the potential for teacher voice for equity in today’s education policy environment.
